A "Saltbox" is actually a building with two stories on one side, and the roof sloping down to one story on the other. In the classic example, the facade style is simple colonial and the roof on the back of the building continues down to the first floor ceiling height. But, the term can also describe something very different. The "California Saltbox" is very contemporary and VERY different from the classic example. I don't care if it has shutters or not. I don't care how symetrical the facade is. If it's not two stories on one side and only one on the other, it's NOT a Saltbox.
(Special Instructions for Real Estate Agents and Builders: If you're not sure you got that, read it again!) The correct term for the simple and unadorned two story colonials is usually simply "New England Colonial." I estimate this term is used incorrectly over 90% of the time, usually by Real Estate Agents and Builders. O.K., so it's not going to ruin the world or anything, but if I don't get it off my chest I swear I might "snap" next time I see it wrong. Just kidding... My wife would warn you about my sense of humor. It seems I have to explain my jokes a lot, whatever that means... :) That's what I think, but... who cares what I think??? Copyright
